Beady mixed Paints, strictly p ure White Lead, Colors, Brushes, W ndow Glass, tec at Jacobi's i t The Tenth of May. To-day, the 10th of May, is the anni versary of the day on which tLe spirit of the immortal ' Stonewall J acksoh winged its flight and "crossed over the river to rest under the shade of the trees." It is an oft toldstory, but the firing of the fatal shot that brought low the brilliant war rior and the ablest Lieutenant to the com mander of the army of Northern Virginia is thought to have been discharged by the 18 th N. O. Regiment under command of the lamented Ooli Furdie. The eight eenth was stationed on picket at the time of the disaster; and they simply did their duty and carried out orders, General Jackson's own orders, in firing the fatal volley which deprived the Army of Northern Virginia of its right arm. We have heard it said, and in fact, the writer of this was told by an officer of the Eighteenth Regiment shortly "after the sad occurrence related; above, that Col. Pur- die's anguish at the terrible result of his regiment's firing, .weighed so heavily 'on his mind that! he seemed to forget all eke, and was not only melancholy, but reckless during the remainder of the uight and the battle of the next day. Col. Pur die was at all times a gallant and fearless eoldier, but we are told that on the morning after the wounding of Jackson, at the battle. -oi Chance llorsville proper, this, brave spirit exhibited a courage equal to rashness, and that it was while he was moving around on the field ordering his men to lie down, while he himself was iu a most exposed position, that the ratal duiib uw waiai pierced his brain, and caused North Caio lina to mourn another departed hero nong the many thousands she Lad already given to th 5 cause. ErnPresident Davis whileun the hands of the vandals and in confinement at Fortress Monroe, gave utterance, during a conversation with the Post Surgeoa, who paid him occasional, visits, to a beautiful sentiment in regard to the death of Jackson, j The conversation, it seems from the Federal doctor's accouut, turned upon the death of Jackson, and he asked Mr. Davis what he thought of th occurrence, when the old man eloquent quoted from Byrnvs English Bards and Scotch Reviewers the following lines: T.-& tfcin nwa renins rave the final blow: And heJp'd to plant the wound that laid thee i.V .!!. '.!! Bo struck the eagle, stretehed opon the plain. Ko more thromgb rolliag eioa to soar acau, Tiewed nis own feather on tbo fatal dart, j AndwUged the shaft that quiverea in nis heart. By his own order the fatal volley was fired that caused the death of the Ulna- trioua patriot and great military chieftain Stonewall Jackson. 1 TV rr,o ttttt tt m n tt -fr VlJ hi II J MONDAY, MAY 10, City Court.
